In order to better provide undergraduates with resources for academic success, the University of Kansas is transforming a popular study space into a hub of social and intellectual collaboration. In the fall 2010 semester, expert faculty and staff will offer specialized, on-demand research and reference assistance in the new “Learning Studio” in Anschutz Library, with referrals to nearby technology, writing, advising, and tutoring services to provide an integrated, student-friendly environment dedicated to innovative learning opportunities and spaces. During this “report from the field,” the process and progress toward providing this suite of services will be discussed. Specifically:1. The Writing and Research Center - Research and writing are integral parts of the same process. The Learning Studio will provide an interactive and collaborative approach to research and writing consultations. Students will work both with writing consultants and librarians and experience a seamless research assignment process.
o Writing consultants are “cross-trained” in both writing center pedagogy and basic research techniques
o Librarians are trained to consult in the writing process
o Working as “teams,” both services help students through the research and writing process2. “Rapid referral” and research consultations - A “one-stop shopping” approach to meet basic informational needs and connect students to appropriate services for in-depth consultations.
o A blended, single service point for information, technology, and quick reference
o Collaborative workstations, offices, and study spaces
o Integrated campus services
o Appointment-setting for a variety of student services
o Connections to student academic success in multiple ways
