Paper given (but not published) at the VIth International Aegean Symposium, Athens, Greece, 31 August - 5 September 1987.
From central Europe through the Balkans and Greece to the Near East a range of clay and stone stamps ("pintaderas") carry similar designs in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages (ca. 4000-2200 BCE). This "koine" attests to a similar use for these objects over this vast area: probably to stamp designs on cloth.
