KU Questionnaire responses, a short conversation, and some songs recorded in 1999 for the Amana German (West Middle German) dialect in Montgomery County, Kansas near Coffeyville. Female speaker, born in 1917.
Description
This is an isolated incidence of Amana German (Kolonie-Deutsch) in Kansas. The speaker was born and raised in the Amana Colonies in Iowa and later came to southeast Kansas with ancestry from both middle- and low-German regions. Although Amana German is normally identified as West Middle German, some evidence of mixed dialects can be found in the questionnaire responses for this speaker. These dialect features are not apparent in the conversation and songs. Search for Philip Webber's work on Kolonie-Deutsch in the Amana villages to learn more about how dialect, written standard German, and English all play a role with speakers there. KU Questionnaire item #14 is missing.
