This work investigates aesthetic form and narratives, reception by scholars and critics as well as context within applicable historic events of German films ranging from 1999 to 2006. It is vital to see the way in which German cinema addresses the most revealing events in the country's past. This work investigates shifts in national identity on film by creating an overview of three historic events and their treatment by the country's own cinema today. The FRG while struggling within the EU creates a new definition of German identity for the future by re-investigating its past.
