The paper is the formal version of lecture delivered at Waseda University in October 2018. The content provides an overview and some observations on the arc of development of Slavic linguistic studies in the US from the author's experience as a student (UCLA, University of Chicago) in the 1980s and a practitioner as a faculty member at the University of Kansas from 1990 onward, with observations on trends in the field.
