    Furoshiki: How to Wrap a Box/Present (K-12 Instructional Series)

    Abstract
    This is an instructional video on how to do two similar folds, wrapping a box for a present. This fold can be made out of any fabric and can be used in different sized and shaped boxes.

    The video is designed as a supplemental hands-on material for teaching Japanese culture to elementary to junior high school students. This material was prepared by the East Asian Library at the University of Kansas.

    You will need (For both version 1 and 2):

    -One Furoshiki (this can be in any fabric) -One Box (full of presents) -Optional: A Card

    Steps to follow (Version 1):

    1. Spread the furoshiki in a diamond shape with the patterned side facing down.

    2. Place the box in the middle of the furoshiki.

    3. Take the corner nearest to you and wrap that around the top of the box.

    4. Take the corner furthest to you and wrap that around the top of the box again.

    5. Fold the left and right corners and join them in the center of the box.

    6. Tie a mamusubi in the center of the box.

    7. Fold the edges inward to clean up the folds.

    8. Optional: place a card between the box and the mamusubi tie.

    Steps to follow (Version 2):

    1. Follow the steps 1 to 7 on Version 1.

    2. Pull on the cloth between the box and the mamusubi tie.

    3. Fold the cloth against the edge of the box and tuck it underneath the mamusubi tie.

    4. Optional: place a card between the box and the mamusubi tie.
