You will need: One bottle, One furoshiki cloth that is about the length of about three times the height of the bottle. This can be in any cloth you would like, however, if you were going to use the handle, we would recommend using cotton.

Steps to follow:

1. Spread out the furoshiki in a diamond shape with the pattern side facing down.

2. Lay the bottle in the middle of the furoshiki and move it slightly off center in the direction of the mouth.

3. Fold the bottom corner over the bottle to sandwich. And make sure there are no air pockets in-between.

4. Roll the bottle away from you against the table.

5. Take the rolled up cloth that doesn’t have the bottle half and align it with the bottle.

6. Take the two rolled up tails and cross them over on the neck of the bottle.

7. Bring the two tails forward and make a mamusubi or tie it twice. Something that is very similar to this technique of folding could be applied to a more everyday carrier such as a cover/holder for your small portable umbrella. You could use the handle to hang from your bag without making a wet mess inside your bag.

You will need:

• An umbrella

• One furoshiki cloth that you would not be too worried about getting dirty or wet. For this, we would recommend cotton.

• An optional hand bag if you would like to hang this from your bag.

Steps to follow:

1. The first couple of steps are very similar to the previous one where you would first spread out the furoshiki in a diamond shape with the pattern side facing down.

2. Lay the umbrella in the center of the furoshiki and move it slightly off center in the direction of the handle.

3. Fold the bottom corner over the bottle to sandwich.

4. Roll the umbrella away from you against the table.

5. This is optional if you want. Hold two of the tail ends and bring them over the handles of your bag.

6. Take these two tail ends from behind the handles and make a mamusubi or tie twice to make a handle. Directions to tie a basic furoshiki knot (mamusubi): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCg34wozIoA

In this tutorial, we will show you how to do two similar folds that are based on rolling the furoshiki with a round object inside. The first one will be on how to wrap a bottle for a present or a decoration for a party, and the second we will show you how to wrap an umbrella with a handle.

The video is designed as a supplemental hands-on material for teaching Japanese culture to elementary to junior high school students. This material was prepared by the East Asian Library at the University of Kansas.
