No atonement for Chillingworth as he deliberately chose evil as his good. b. Dimmesdale atones through repentance, penance, and finally public confession. c. Pearl gains her freedom through hatred of falsehood and a demand for truth. d. Hester atones by contrition, confession, and satisfaction. Conclusion.
