This is one of hundreds of 60-second radio spots created by the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) for Kansas Public Radio (KPR). The purpose of this outreach program is to introduce the people of Kansas to the culture and current issues of East Asia.
Broadcast Transcript: They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, if there is no picture for a news story, just make something up! This is the premise a Hong Kong-based computer animation company has based its success on. No video footage for your news item? No problem. The company will provide an animated sequence to go with it. Journalistic purists are critical of the loose handling of facts. For example, characters in crime story animations are typically blonde-haired and blue-eyed no matter where the crime took place. Doesn't seem to be affecting viewership though: these newsertainments have quite a following. In fact, 46% of its viewers are U.S. residents. Next step? News anchors being replaced with animations . "Now with the traffic report, here's Speed Racer." #boyd #ceas #hacker #HongKong
