This is one of hundreds of 60-second radio spots created by the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) for Kansas Public Radio (KPR). The purpose of this outreach program is to introduce the people of Kansas to the culture and current issues of East Asia.
Broadcast Transcript: Qin shi huang di was the first emperor of China back in the 3rd Century BC. Qin for the dynasty. Shi for first. Huang for emperor and di for emperor. The First Emperor unified China, standardized the language and started building the Great Wall. Now a veritable pantheon of Chinese talent is collaborating to produce The First Emperor, an opera about this legendary leader: director Zhang Yimou will stage it, author Ha Jin will pen the libretto, and Oscar-winner Tan Dun will compose the music. As for the title role: it will be played by Placido Domingo. Or should we call him Qin shi huang "D"? Qin for the dynasty. Shi for first. Huang for emperor and D for Domingo.
