| dc.description.abstract | Oral history interview with Ivan Werner, Cora Schulte, and Katie Scheck conducted by Jeffrey Caton in Herzog, Kansas, on October 22, 2009. In this interview, Ivan Werner (longtime congregation member and chairman of the St. Fidelis centennial celebration committee), Cora Schulte (church historian for St. Fidelis), and Katie Scheck (church sacristan for St. Fidelis) discuss the history of Saint Fidelis Catholic Church (also known as the "Cathedral of the Plains") in Victoria, Kansas. They describe the Russian German ethnic heritage of the congregation, the role of the church and the German language in the local community, and changes in community demographics. They also discuss the design and construction of the stone cathedral and its altars. They discuss religious education of children, church services, wedding customs, and celebrations and community events. | |
