Abstract

This work relates the history of the founding of the Wilcox Classical Museum in 1888 and its close ties to what would become the Department of Classics at the University of Kansas.

Originally published on the History page of the Wilcox Classical Museum web site (https://wilcox.ku.edu). This record includes two additional supplemental files: 1. An article in the Kansas City Times from April 9, 1888 that describes the initial steps in creating the museum and describes the plaster casts that were the basis of the collections in the museum. 2. A digital copy of a report about the Department of Latin Language and Literature by Professor D.H. Robinson, Professor of Latin Language and Literature. This report describes the initial steps in creating the museum and his hopes that the museum would receive funding to be able to grow the collections.
