Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define the nature of the service sector, examine the reasons for the growing importance of the service sector in U.S. and Kansas economies, document the structural changes in the economies of the U.S., the region, and Kansas brought about by service sector growth, examine the distribution of service sector growth between urban and rural locations, explore the consequences of service sector growth for productivity in the U.S. and Kansas, examine the wages of service sector jobs, examine whether Kansas has been able to attract high wage service sector jobs, understand the labor force requirements of current and emerging service industries, examine the importance of services to Kansas export base, and examine the links between services and other sectors of the Kansas economy.
