Abstract
Functional analysis (FA) procedures have been used to assess maintaining variables of problem behavior in both human and non-human animals. Despite the plethora of research in human populations, there are a limited number of FA examples with non-humans, and even fewer studies incorporating modifications to standard methods of assessment. One modification to the FA that has not been evaluated with non-human animals is the trial-based functional analysis (TBFA), in which control and test conditions are embedded in naturalistic environments. With an increased interest in humane and effective treatments for companion animals, the current study aimed to bridge the gap between TBFA procedures and non-human animal research. This dissertation aimed to compare a standard FA with a TBFA across different dog problem behavior topographies. The results of the TBFA corresponded to the standard FA for every participant. Individualized treatments were designed based on the results of the FA to reduce problem behavior. Implications of the TBFA include feasibility for both privately-owned dogs and dogs under the care of shelters. The TBFA offers a modification to established FAs that may allow increased access to assessment of problem behavior.
