Obadare, EbenezerShields, Autumn2009-04-282009-04-282008-01-012008http://dissertations.umi.com/ku:10008https://hdl.handle.net/1808/4506This study examines the range of responses to Somali newcomers in Emporia, Kansas, in schools, in the health community, in the Emporia Refugee Resettlement Alliance (ERRA), and in the local media. Based on data gathered in in-depth interviews, observation of ERRA meetings, and close study of local news stories and an online forum, the study focuses on barriers to incorporation of the Somali newcomers into the community. Challenges arose not only from practical considerations such as meeting the need for English language classes and interpreting, health screenings, and driver's education, but also from widespread rumors and misinformation regarding the refugee population.
