This study focuses on what we know about women in Bronze Age Crete (ca. 3000-1000 BCE). Rather than tracing ancient Minoan women through time, period by period, this study takes the point of view of the women themselves, charting their life: what we know about Minoan infant girls, adolescent girls, young adult women, mature women, and old women. The evidence cited comes from the ancient texts and from archaeology (e.g., representations in wall paintings and sculpture, and on vases). Special sections deal with hairstyles and age grades, costume, health and diet, childbirth, and death.

An understanding of the processes in building a Greek temple and of the processes in creating large marble sculpture supports the idea that the metopes and pedimental sculptures were installed unfinished in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. This study then reconstructs the history of the sculptures after their installation in order to understand what Pausanias saw during his visit in the mid-2nd century A.D.

This short study augments Younger 1978 (AJA 82, 285-299) by investigating elements of the Mycenae-Vapheio Lion Group's style in seals that impressed sealings in Crete. It is postulated that the M-V Lion Group started in Crete and may have moved to the Mainland. (Note: the author no longer thinks this conclusion is valid, but rather most LBA sealstones were made in Crete [except for the Mainland Popular Group]; see Younger 2010, "Attributing Aegean Seals," CMS Beiheft 8, 413-24.)

Style
This paper summarizes the methodology used for attributing Minoan-Mycenaean sealstones to stylistic groups, and assesses the reception of this method since the mid 1980s. A closing section points out that little work has been done to attribute gold rings, and asks whether any Aegean seals of the Late Bronze Age were ever made on the Mainland and whether identifying artists really adds to our understanding of Aegean seals.

Bronze Age Representations of Aegean Bull-Leaping
Younger, John G.
Aegean
Bull-leaping
There were three main ways to depict bull-leaping in the Aegean Late Bronze Age (ca. 1600-1300 BCE): grabbing the bull's horns and having the bull flip the leaper over its back (Evans's Schema), diving down the bull's neck from an elevated position (Diving Leaper Schema), and floating above the bull while perhaps executing a vault over the bull's back (Floating Leaper Schema).

Bearing Razors and Swords: Paracomedy in Euripides’ Orestes
Jendza, Craig
In this article, I trace a nuanced interchange between Euripides’ Helen, Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae, and Euripides’ Orestes that contains a previously overlooked example of Aristophanic paratragedy and Euripides’ paracomic response. I argue that the escape plot from Helen, in which Menelaus and Helen flee with “sword-bearing” men (ξιφηφόρος), was co-opted in Thesmophoriazusae, when Aristophanes staged Euripides escaping with a man described as “being a razor-bearer” (ξυροφορέω). Furthermore, I suggest that Euripides re-appropriates this parody by escalating the quantity of sword-bearing men in Orestes, suggesting a dynamic poetic rivalry between Aristophanes and Euripides. Additionally, I delineate a methodology for evaluating instances of paracomedy.

Technical Observations on the Sculptures from the Temple of Zeus at Olympia
Younger, John G.
This is the published version.
Technical observations on the sculptures from the Temple of Zeus at Olympia
allow a reconstruction of their appearance at installation and of the major
changes made afterward. At installation, many sculptures were unfinished;
the west pediment had more centaur groups than are preserved today; and the
horse blocks on the east pediment were separated, one in front of the other.
By the time of Pausanias's visit in A.D. 174, the sculptures had suffered major
damage at least twice (in the mid-4th century and the early 2nd century B.C.);
his identification of Kaineus in the west pediment may refer to a headless
Apollo propped up on his knees, flanked by centaurs.

Aegean Bronze Age Sealstones and Fingerrings: Chronology and Functions
Younger, John G.
Facilitated by the volumes of the Corpus der minoischen und mykenischen Siegel (Berlin 1960-2009), scholars studying Minoan and Mycenaean sealstones and sealings of the Aegean Bronze Age (ca. 2300-1300 BCE) have worked in two major areas: chronology and function. Chronology is now well understood through a process of creating a stylistic typology for seals that can be fixed in time through seals from stratigraphic excavations. Understanding the function of seals relies on a detailed typology of sealings and their role in administration as witnessed by documents written in the three major Aegean scripts, Cretan Pictographic and Linear A and B.

Genus quid est? Roman Scholars on Grammatical Gender and Biological Sex*
Corbeill, Anthony P.
This is the published version, also available here: http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/apa.0.0007.
From at least as early as Varro, Roman scholars and grammarians occupy themselves with cataloguing peculiar instances of grammatical gender. The practice, with little extant precedent in Greek tradition, finds the grammarians consistently placing great importance upon the identification of grammatical gender with biological sex. I attempt to explain this fascination with "sex and gender" by assessing ancient explanations for the fluid gender of nouns, and by considering the commonest practitioners of grammatical gender-bending (in particular Vergil). By dividing the world into discrete sexual categories, Latin vocabulary works to encourage the pervasive heterosexualization of Roman culture.

MASCULINITY AND MONUMENTS IN PROPERTIUS 4.9
Welch, Tara S.
This is the published version, also available here: http://www.dx.doi.org/10.1353/ajp.2004.0009.
In elegy 4.9, Propertius connects the story of Hercules' transvestism to some of Rome's most ancient and venerable sites: the Ara Maxima, the subject of the poem's aition, and the sanctuary of the Bona Dea, where the poem's action takes place. These locations resonate with Rome's traditional gender roles and with the Augustan urban renovation. This essay argues that Propertius' use of monuments in 4.9 responds to and challenges the Princeps' use of Roman places as a means to solidify his position in the new Rome, thereby establishing the poet as the Princeps' rival in creating urban meaning.

Art
A large number of works of art dating from early in the Aegean Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550-1450 BCE) share stylistic features; for instance, lions will have a peculiarly raised mane like a fish-gill, furred belly and haunch, flame-like locks of hair on the mane, thick forelegs, and a saphenous vein curving down the backlegs. Such shared stylistic features characterize these works as the products of a large and highly versatile workshop, called the "Mycenae-Vapheio Lion" workshop known from the two principal sites that have yielded its products.

Part 1 (by Maria Shaw) focuses on international styles in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Late Bronze. Part 2 (by John Younger) focuses on the types of bull-leaping depicted in the Tell el-Daba frescoes and comes to the conclusion that the "Diving Leaper" schema is depicted exclusively, which may indicate a Mycenaean influence.

Women in Relief. 'Double Consciousness' in Classical Attic Tombstones

Cemeteries
Homoeroticism
The classical Greek cemetery was a women's space. The tombstones were often decorated with idealized portraits of the women buried below; other women are also often depicted, and inscriptions give names and qualities. A living woman, tending the plots, would be encouraged by these depictions and inscriptions to contemplate the women buried there -- and to create narratives. Somewhere in the creation of these narratives would be romantic desire.
