Optimatization of sample points for monitoring arable land quality by simulated annealing while considering spatial variations

GIS Day
This presentation was given as part of the GIS Day@KU symposium on November 16, 2016. For more information about GIS Day@KU activities, please see http://gis.ku.edu/gisday/2016/.
Arable land is the basis of food production, the most valuable input in agricultural production, and an important factor in sustainable agricultural development and national food security. In China, the reduction and degradation of arable land due to industrialization and urbanization has gradually emerged as one of the most prominen challenges. In this context, the
long-term dynamic monitoring of arable land quality becomes important for protecting arable land resources. However, little consideration has been given to optimizing sample points number and layout in previous monitoring studies on arable land quality. When considering the optimization of sample points, various strategies are needed, depending on the indicators. In addition, the distributio of soil properties displays spatial variations. However, existing sampling studies have
paid little attention to spatial variations during scenarios with multiple indicators. Therefore, it is necessary to further investigate how to improve the efficiency and accuracy of arable land quality monitoring and evaluation by optimizing the number and layout of sample points when there are spatial variations in multiple indicators.

The Use of Geographic Information Systems to Model Habitat for Puma concolor cougar in the Northern Blue Ridge of Virginia
Houser, Rhonda
Geographic information systems
Felis concolor cougar
GIS
Habitat model
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to predict suitable habitat for the eastern cougar (Puma concolor cougar) in the Northern Blue Ridge of Virginia. Two areas were studied, a primary area nested inside a secondary area. Objectives were accomplished by relating eastern cougar sighting locations, the dependent variable, to environmental variables considered important to habitat. These variables were elevation, geology, human density, land cover, landform, prey density, roads, and streams/rivers. Logistic regression identified elevation, geology, landform, and distance to the nearest road as significant predictor variables for the primary area, and no variables for the secondary area. The significant variables were fit to the regression equation, resulting in a sighting probability coverage, from which suitable habitat areas were derived and suitability was tested with additional sighting data. The regression equation generated by primary area data was applied to the secondary area and two habitat models were built, one with and one without the roads variable. Chi-square results indicated that three of the five habitat models tested were significantly better than random. The efficacy of predicting habitat suitability based on eastern cougar sighting data was dependent on the scale and quality of these data.

As a critical data management task, conflation in GIS aims to determine the corresponding features from different datasets that in reality represent the same entities. This is called feature matching, which is used as a guidance to merge attributes of corresponding features between datasets. Based on the classification of features, there are point, polyline, and polygon matching methods. This study focuses on matching polygons and explores optimization–based matching methods for conflating two datasets.

Burning Down the Mouse: Fired Up About Historical Maps

sanborn maps
At the University of Kansas Libraries, we continue to make steady progress on georeferencing our statewide collection of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. Sanborn maps were created for towns and cities across the entire United States, and this project covers 241 Kansas towns between the years 1883 and 1922. The maps show property boundaries, building footprints and material, heat source, and more. They also describe in detail local resources such as water supply, and police and firefighting capacity. Sanborn maps are naturally intriguing, facilitating inquiry about how places change across the landscape and over time. For some of the towns, the peak of their population and urban development may be captured on a Sanborn map, due to industries such as farming, livestock, and mining, along with railway building. The presentation will include a brief overview and update on the project, including staff and funding, number of maps and cities completed, and our plans to make the maps available for public and GIS use.

Landslides are among the most destructive forces of nature. Estimating susceptibility through modeling is an essential tool for
planning and mitigation efforts. Some regions, however, are too dangerous or lack the capacity to develop extensive inventories for rigorous analyses. Remote sensing and GIS allow for initial risk assessment and hazard planning. Data derived primarily from remote sensing, or developed before and during war efforts of the last few decades were used for this study of landslide susceptibility in Afghanistan.

A entomopathogenic fungus, a fungus that kills its host caterpillar to proliferate. This fungus cures a plethora of ailments. It is one of the most expensive natural resources of the world and a resource that emancipated many from poverty in the remote mountains in the Tibetan plateau and the adjoining high altitude areas of Central and Eastern Himalaya. Geographically, a fine resolution information is lacking for majority of its distribution area. We explored a small region Askot landscape in the state Uttarakhand in Western Himalaya in India. The quest culminated in an extensive questionnaire survey with the villagers and harvesters. A current distribution map based on survey and a predicted suitable zone map using MaXent was produced. The concept is based on distributional ecology of a species which cross sections into concepts of species distribution model and ecological niche modelling. The inputs included both abiotic and biotic factos, albiet complexity. After repeated calibration and manual evaluation analysis, we chose elevation, aspect, slope and 12 PCA inputs of 68 MODIS 13Q1 NDVI layers (2012-2013) as the input data. Presence only data distributed as 10 random replicate pairs is used for training data and evalutation. Occurrence data is error free as it is a primary source data. Model evaluation returned a AUC ratio > 1 values for each, indicating that Maxent curve was significantly elevated above the bull expectations. The process of generating a suitability map convinced us of a sustainable harvest approach for safeguarding direct benefit to people's livelihood and indirectly the local environment.

GIS Day @ KU 2007 Symposium Schedule
GIS Day @ KU Planning Committee
GIS day KU
Schedule
6th Annual
GIS Day @ KU
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007
5th Floor - Kansas Union
GIS Day @ KU is part of a nationwide event to promote awareness of geographic information systems (GIS), and how we use this evolving tool to analyze our world. We continue our tradition of bringing together a community of GIS users from academia, business and government. This year's focus is on the range of available software solutions (both proprietary and open-source), and how GIS and the web are combining to create new and exciting capabilities. The 2007 symposium also includes a new event, an information fair with vendors from academia and local business that will run throughout the day. As always, GIS Day @ KU is FREE and open to the public.
