Abstract
This study was intended to measure objectively whether there was a significant difference in the perceptions of trust, intimacy and the overall quality of the relationship between newlywed couples who participated in the 6- week marriage enrichment course, Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds, and newlywed couples who did not participate in the course. The specific questions for investigation were: (1) Is there significant difference in the trust and intimacy reported by participants between recently married couples who do take Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds and recently married couples who do not? (2) Is there significant difference in the overall quality of the relationship as reported by subjects between newlywed couples who do take Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds and newlywed couples who do not?
The subjects for this investigation were 43 newlywed (married 2 years or less) participants in the Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds course and 40 newlywed control persons. The volunteer experimental subjects participated in 15-18 hours of group experience distributed over a 6-week period.
Two inventories were used to assess trust, intimacy and the overall quality of the relationship, the Interpersonal Relationship Scale (IRS) and the Relationship Change Scale (RCS).
The results show that although couples who participate in Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds do not improve significantly more in their perceptions of trust and intimacy than those who do not participate, they have a higher perception of the overall quality of their relationship than those who do not take the course. These findings support the conclusion that Growth in Marriage for Newlyweds does aid couples in the critical first 2 years of marriage although the specific areas of trust and intimacy are not altered significantly.
