Abstract
AbstractWeb-based public speaking has become increasingly more common following the rise of COVID-19 and technological advancements. A method that has been successful in training both in vivo and remote public speaking behaviors has been awareness training (e.g., Montes et al., 2019; Ortiz et al., 2022; Spieler & Miltenberger, 2017); however, little research has been conducted remotely or on other distracting nonvocal behaviors. We first conducted a survey to understand the differences between web-based public speaking and in-person public speaking. Then we extended previous research by investigating the effects of remote awareness training on distracting nonvocal behavior (i.e., eye contact) with three participants. During baseline, two participants demonstrated moderate to high levels of distracting nonvocal behaviors, and one participant demonstrated low levels of nonvocal behaviors. Following awareness training, all three participants demonstrated decreases in the targeted distracting nonvocal behavior. Thus far, the targeted distracting nonvocal behavior generalized to a small audience and maintained 2 weeks post training. Keywords: awareness training, nonvocal behaviors, public speaking
