Abstract
The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive study was to examine secondary teachers’ perceptions of student evaluations of teaching (SETs) using the Network for Educator Effectiveness (NEE) framework in a suburban Missouri school district. As K–12 evaluation systems increasingly incorporate student feedback, the trust teachers place in SET data and the extent to which they use that data to inform instructional decisions represent important considerations for both policy implementation and professional practice. Grounded by the Network for Educator Effectiveness model and prior research highlighting concerns related to validity, fairness, and bias, this study explored how teachers interpret the usefulness of SETs and whether demographic characteristics influence those perceptions.A quantitative, descriptive survey method used a 20-item 6-point Likert-scale instrument adapted from existing K–12 SET research. Participants included 136 certified secondary teachers in grades 6–12 who completed the voluntary anonymous survey. Findings indicated that teachers reported moderate levels of trust in SETs. A statistically significant positive correlation was identified between trust and use, suggesting that teachers who perceive student feedback as credible are more likely to apply it in practice. A statistically significant difference was also found between high school and middle school teachers, with high school teachers reporting greater trust in student surveys.
Findings suggest that while teachers recognize the value of student perspectives, broader adoption of SETs as a tool for instructional improvement depends on strengthening trust in the validity and fairness of student input. It is recommended that school leaders develop communication, training and support structures related to SET implementation using the NEE model.
