Abstract
The following stories were compiled, transcribed and translated by William D. Keel. Primary sources for these anecdotes are tape-recorded interviews with the storytellers. "Der Nuschnik" was written by Lawrence A. Weigel and has also been reproduced in the master's thesis of Patrick Kaul ("Untersuchungen zum Deutsch in Kansas," 1996, University of Mannheim). A slightly different version of "Der is der andere Weg gange!" appears in phonetic transcription and translation in Chris Johnson's 1994 dissertation "The Volga German Dialect ofSchoenchen, Kansas" (University of Kansas). The versions here are presented in an orthographic transcription based on Standard German orthographic rules to facilitate readability.
