Abstract
This study is the search for a linguistic homeland-a Heimatbestimmung-for the dialects still remembered in the original six Catholic villages of Ellis and Rush counties. Such a Heimatbestimmung should not be construed to mean that we can determine the points of origin for the ancestors of these Kansas Germans in the German-speaking homeland. Rather, it is essentially a linguistic description of the dialects of the main Catholic villages in Ellis and Rush counties in terms of the characteristics which distinguish the continental West Germanic dialects. The result will be a place on the German dialect map for these twice-transplanted German dialects.
