Abstract

Previous treatments of Japanese accent have regarded accent as a diacritic feature on the basis of which pitch patterns are predicted by general rules. I will show here that there are reasons for regarding pitch as inherently present in Japanese words, and will offer a tentative analysis founded on this assumption.
