Abstract
Queer music educators must make the difficult decision whether to disclose their sexuality within all areas of their lives. Known as “coming out”, this disclosure is often impacted by various systems of support and oppression that the Queer music educator experiences throughout their life. Systems of support and oppression may change over the years, impacting the Queer individual’s feelings of safety, and thus whether to come out or stay closeted. More research, however, is needed to understand how the Queer music educator navigates support and oppression. The purpose of this study was to explore how Queer music educators experience support and oppression in their lives as it related to their sexuality. A purposive convenience snowball sampling was used to recruit participants who, (a) identified as Queer, and (b) at the time of the study were, or had recently been, music educators. Participants were asked to submit slideshows with images and narratives representative of support and oppression in their lives. Slideshows and follow-up interviews were analyzed, revealing three primary themes: (a) Navigating Community, (b) Decoding Communication, and (c) Self-preservation, with a super theme of Changes Over Time.
