School-Based Speech Language Pathologists’ Service Delivery to Students with Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Survey Study

Abstract
The researcher investigated school-based speech-language pathologists’ service delivery to student survivors of pediatric traumatic brain injury in comparison to the American Speech Language and Hearing Association’s guidelines for serving child survivors of pediatric traumatic brain injury. The research questions included: (1) According to current (within the last 5 years) school-based speech language pathologists, how do their services to students with pediatric traumatic brain injury compare to the current American Speech Language Hearing Association’s guidelines for pediatric traumatic brain injury? and (2) According to current (practicing or within the last 5 years) school based speech language pathologists, what are the barriers and recommendations to improve adherence to America Speech Language Hearing Association’s guidelines for serving children with pediatric traumatic brain injury? Fifty school-based speech language pathologists participated in an online anonymous survey through self-selection sampling via social media, state speech-language and hearing associations, and email. The survey consisted of multiple choice, short answer, and Likert scale statements. Fifty school-based speech language pathologists responded to survey 46 school-based speech language pathologists provided their level of likelihood to do a given statement from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association’s guidelines on service delivery to children survivors of pediatric traumatic brain injury. Free response questions investigated barriers and recommendations for providing services to students with pTBI. The researcher analyzed results, Likert scale statements, descriptively and comparatively. The researcher analyzed free response questions qualitatively.
