Abstract
There are several problems arising over the use of current materials in classrooms and it is the intention of this study to select a few for detailed analysis, particularly those of which relate to theories of democratic teaching. The incentive for this study arises from the fact that, although there is an increasing number and variety of current materials available to teachers, there are no clear-cut criteria for selecting and using such materials in day-to-day teaching.
This study limits the scope of current materials to those which are to be read. Audio and visual techniques, as represented in films, radio, television, and recordings, required special treatment and probably could not be covered adequately if included, together with reading matter, within the scope of a single study. Therefore, this study is limited to investigation and analysis of the use of materials such as newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, brochures, leaflets, and government publications, all designed for circulation to the general public.
