Abstract
Since the early nineteen-hundreds. more and more emphasis is being placed upon objective measurement or readability. Early attempts to evaluate the reading difficulty of textbooks have brought about this recent concern about readability. Interest in objective measurement of readability has been growing steadily since the first basic research was done by Vogel and Washburne. It is estimated by Klare that up to the present time there are thirty-tour formulas or methods for determining the reading difficulty of printed material. Five of the more recently developed formulas have been singled out for critical analyses here.
