Abstract
ABSTRACTThe art of solo piano transcription writing has been used as a device for several reasons. Some of these reasons may include popularizing another composer’s ensemble composition, simplifying a theme for pedagogical purposes, and showcasing one’s compositional or virtuosic ability. Two specific composers that are renowned for their virtuosic abilities and several contributions to the craft of the solo piano concert include Franz Liszt and Vladimir Horowitz. Both composer pianists had this astonishing ability to utilize virtuosic techniques and apply them to pre-existent themes and melodies on to the concert stage. This is prevalent today because pre-existent music is mixed, transcribed, or simplified for pedagogical or performance purposes. Examples include simplifying a popular theme in a Hal Leonard method book, hearing a remix of a song on the radio, watching a live performance of Yuja Wang or Peter Bence with their own transcriptions of Mozart or Queen, amongst others. It’s important to consider how history has enabled this craft to evolve for the beginner transcription writer. In analyzing a few transcriptions from two composer pianists from two separate periods in time one may learn how to apply this tradition of writing to create something new and original. A few transcription techniques studied in this document will be applied to a popular film score to set an example for the beginner writer.
