Abstract
Transgenerational plasticity (TGP) allows plants to alter their offspring phenotypes based on environmental conditions they experience. This study specifically centers on adaptive TGP where parental encounter to an environmental condition enhances the offspring fitness in similar situations. The key focus here is priming, which is a form of adaptive TGP where offspring perform better when the conditions match with parents. Priming is a targeted response to the recurrence of an environmental condition which is predictable across generations. I investigated whether experiencing density by parents in Mimulus platycalyx shapes offspring traits including height, biomass and flower numbers and whether this is because of priming. My experience tested the effect of various density levels at parental generation on offspring traits when offspring experiencing match and mismatch conditions compared to their parents. Results showed that offspring of high-density parents became taller, had more biomass and produced more flowers when they grew under similar conditions as their parents, suggested density induced priming. This work highlights the importance of environmental conditions predictability in TGP and the way incorporation of parental and offspring environments improves offspring performance under recurring conditions. This study has potential implications for plants’ responses to environmental conditions in natural and agricultural systems.
