Abstract
Abstract Leading scholars in the field of positive psychology of the family have recognized a need for more strengths-based family assessments that are grounded in theory and applicable to diverse populations. To date, no assessment of family engagement—defined as the positive behaviors family members carry out to invest in and learn about the family unit and members, and to achieve individual and common family goals—exists within the field. The aim of this study was to define more clearly the term "family engagement" and to develop a measure of this concept: The Family Engagement Behaviors Scale (FEBS). Results show initial support for the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the FEBS, as well as concurrent validity of the FEBS when correlated with existing strengths-based family assessments. Implications and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
