Abstract
Oral history interview with Ken and Mika Roper conducted by Aspen Grender in Lawrence, Kansas, on December 6, 2016. This interview features Ken and Mika Roper (husband and wife), who are members of Soka Gakkai International (SGI). Ken discusses growing up in a Catholic family in Washington state and, after a lengthy period during which he claimed no religious affiliation, his eventual involvement in SGI. Mika speaks about being raised in Yokohama, Japan in a family of practicing Soka Gakkai. The Ropers both discuss the origins of the movement, its presence in the US and Japan in recent history and now, representation in the state of Kansas, its central principles, and the tense relationship between SGI and other Buddhist groups.
