Abstract
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all equipment that uses electrical power be certified as electrically safe by a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) prior to being placed in service. While it is very appropriate to ensure that workers and consumers are protected from electrical hazards in unsafe equipment the OSHA required procedures to obtain this end result can add undue complexity, cost and time to the manufacturing and delivery of new equipment. This paper focuses on the size and type of equipment typically found in a manufacturing facility and what the best option(s) an equipment manufacturer would have in complying with regulations while controlling costs and maximizing their ability to rapidly deliver equipment that matches the needs of potential customers.
