Abstract
The History of Black Writing's 2022 Black Literary Suite highlights Afro-Latinx authors and scholars. For this online exhibit we have selected a list of literary works from primarily Afro-Latina/x women writers, who represent nations and identities often ignored in studies of Latinx/Latin American and African diasporic literature: Afro-Puerto Ricans and Caribbeans living in New York City, Afro-Haitians, Afro-Cubans, Afro-Mexicans in the United States, Afro-Dominicans, and Afro Brazilians. These works include historical fiction, short story collections, autobiographical fiction, and speculative fiction from both established and emerging Afro-Latinx writers.
One common thread that runs through these works is the tradition of reclaiming historical and cultural narratives, though these works each come from different cultural contexts within the Afro-Latinx and Afro-Latin American diaspora. Moreover, these works explore themes of revolution, femme freedom, and a sense of belonging and non-belonging among Afro-Latinx women. As a result, these works foreground the voices of people at the intersection of multiple oppressions—racism, sexism, classism, violence, and xenophobia—within their communities. These selections offer just a few examples of how Blackness is multifaceted and contains a multitude of experiences, while each selection exemplifies the power of fiction to redefine the cultural narratives and positions of Afro-Latinx communities in their respective societies.
