Abstract
This study investigated the effects of resistance training on selected fitness and performance variables in youth. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant changes in body weight, body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, vertical jump, vertical jump power, sprint speed, and agility as related to basketball skills in female and male high school basketball players from a rural area after completing an eight week resistance training program. The participants were 21 male and 15 female basketball players ages 14 to 18 from a rural high school. The study consisted of pre-testing and post-testing of the variables of interest. A mixed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that there were no significant differences (p = .05) among any of the variables for the time main effect, all gender main effects were significant at p p < .01. Based on the findings further research is needed to help determine the effects of resistance training on the variables of interest in the population.
