Abstract
This qualitative case study seeks to answer the question, “How does Carpentries membership work inside a member institution?” The Carpentries organization teaches data and computing tools and skills to researchers. Institutions can implement a regular program of Carpentries workshops taught by local instructors by joining the Carpentries as institutional members. While the steps to becoming a member are readily available, little public information exists about operating an institutional membership. To answer this question, this case study examines the first five years of the University of Oklahoma’s institutional Carpentries membership, focusing on its membership activities, workflows, sponsorship, and value to participants. The study reveals the complexity of Carpentries membership operations and suggests takeaways for existing and potential member institutions.
