Abstract
Because of their marital stability, 236 couples married at least 40 years were selected to indicate the importance of agreement on money management; agreement on raising children; amount of time together; arguments settled with give and take; being able to say, ā€œI’m sorry;ā€ choosing to act loving; commitment to a Higher Power; commitment to the marriage; communication; family approval of mate; forgiveness; getting along with in-laws; happiness of parents’ marriage; important decisions discussed; love; not bringing up the past; physical demonstration of affection; quality of time; sexual relationship; similar goals; time apart; and trust to their lasting marriage. Using chi-square analysis, three hypotheses were tested for the 22 factors. With responses from 120 men and 126 women, there were no significant differences between men and women regarding the importance of each factor, except for commitment to a Higher Power and time apart. When the responses of men and women were combined, length of marriage was related to the importance of agreement on money management, agreement on raising children, amount of time together, choosing to act loving, commitment to a Higher Power, commitment to the marriage, family approval of mate, forgiveness, getting along with in-laws, happiness of parents’ marriage, love, sexual relationship, and trust. For men, every factor was related to length of marriage except commitment to the marriage. For wives, differences were observed for agreement on money management, amount of time together, choosing to act loving, commitment to a Higher Power, commitment to the marriage, family approval of mate, forgiveness, happiness of parents’ marriage, important decisions discussed, not bringing up the past, quality of time, sexual relationship, similar goals, time apart, and trust. Upon combining the responses, marital happiness was related to the importance of agreement on raising children, family approval of mate, and love. For husbands, all factors except agreement on money management, arguments settled with give and take, commitment to a Higher Power, forgiveness, quality of time, time apart, and trust were significant. The importance of communication, happiness of parents’ marriage, love, quality of time, and trust were related to marital happiness, according to the wives.
