Abstract
Students of developmental psychology, by and large, are principally concerned with understanding the many changes in functioning observed in the course of the child’s development. There is a large body of information describing the quantitative and qualitative changes in functioning that occur concomitant with increasing maturity. This evidence is derived from a variety of sources: observational and experimental studies, anecdotal accounts and other methods. This areas of specialized study within the field of child development have also been diverse: some studies have been concerned with the assessments of changes in relatively specific psychological functions (for example, sensory-motor processes, perception, thought, language and memory), others attempt to explore developmental changes in broader areas (for example, emotional, social and adaptive behavior). Despite the variety of methods and areas of specialized interest, there has emerged a broad overall concept of some of the salient features of developmental processes.
