Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a pedagogical guide to contemporary piano music through a selected collection of intermediate-level piano compositions. The selected compositions consist of diversified styles and cultural backgrounds outside conventional pedagogical repertoire. This project allows the piano educator to achieve general views of varied styles in the piano repertoire from the twentieth century to the present day, as well as underrepresented composers and their piano works. During the last decade, the piano repertoire has been expanded and diversified extensively. Nevertheless, diversity deficiencies remain in piano pedagogical practice in modern times. Students and instructors will be able to select from a variety of composers and styles, arranged by technical and musical difficulty. The introduction to each work and composer will include a brief biography and style, as well as a style vector to provide an understanding of the compositional style. It will explain technical and musical elements to aid pedagogical use.
