Abstract
East Lawrence, which that covers about fifty city blocks, has always been a “working class” neighborhood of diverse people who represent a number of ethnic backgrounds and races, hold a variety of religious beliefs and divergent political views, and come from a narrow range of socio-economic stations, with a number of pivotal exceptions. In spite of all the conflicting values and interests embedded in the countless differences among people who have contested the East Lawrence neighborhood both physically and philosophically since 1854, the neighborhood has maintained a clear and continuous identity as a place where plain-spoken, working-class people live.
