Abstract
The purpose of this study is two-fold" (1) to compare readability and interest level of certain books recommended for retarded readers in grades seven to twelve, and (2) to attempt to determine if these materials are effective in improving the reading ability of a selected group of pupils.
The next chapter consists of a review of the literature pertinent to the purposes of the study. Included are related studies and the statements of a number of authorities in the field regarding readability, the relationship of interest and difficulty, the use of "easy" materials in the improvement of reading, and reading ability and intelligence.
