Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the reasons for small private college participation in intercollegiate athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic. The dissertation also provides context to institutional staff members' decision-making processes and experiences charged with overseeing athletics participation. Finally, the dissertation highlights the experiences of student-athletes participating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with student-athletes, athletic department personnel (administrators and coaches) and campus administrators (i.e., Presidents). In total, 48 interviews were conducted across 40 different institutions and 21 different conferences. Findings were classified into three general themes: (1) Factors Impacting the Decision to Participate; (2) Experience of Institutional Staff Members; and (3) Experience of Student-Athletes. Each theme was further delineated into subthemes as well. The dissertation was grounded in Institutional Theory with a specific emphasis on the permeation of coercive, mimetic, and normative isomorphism. This theoretical underpinning helps to explain better the decision-making processes discussed throughout the dissertation. The dissertation yields practical and theoretical implications for small private college administrators and coaches.
