Abstract
Paul Sifler, a Slovenian-American composer, teacher, and organist was employed in both New York City and Hollywood, California. He earned degrees from the Chicago Conservatory and spent the majority of his career at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hollywood and Temple Sinai, Glendale, California. His employment in both church and synagogue led to a wide variety of compositions for the organ on both Christian and Jewish melodies. Though a composer in many genres, this document focuses on Sifler’s sacred instrumental works with organ. The author makes observations about Sifler’s compositional techniques and style by drawing from examples of selected works. This document discusses the history of Slovenian sacred music as well as a brief biography of Sifler. It seeks to highlight the broad tonal language and output of Sifler, a relatively unknown composer who is arguably the most prolific Slovenian-American classical musician of all time.
