Abstract
Because great composers in the past had immensely exploited standard tonal keyboard music, modern composers have sought other possibilities outside the established system, breaking the shackles of traditional concepts. Some composers twisted the common idea of pitches and harmony, some experimented with innovative metric and rhythmic arrangements, and some expanded the general responsibilities of a pianist. Eve Beglarian, an American composer, performer and adventurer, challenges the pre-established boundary between composers and performers. Her works are generally pianistically simple while conceptually profound and particularly demanding of performers. Instead of being a translator of the composer’s written score, the performer is required, in Beglarian’s work, to further participate in the compositional process, to respond and express individual emotions that build into the eventual musical setting. Modern pianists, as a reaction towards this new century revolution, ought to be aware and take initiative. This paper concentrates on an indeterminate work, From the Same Melancholy Fate by Eve Beglarian. To thoroughly explore this improvisatory electronic work, I will follow the timeline of my preparation, investigating multiple trends of major twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers who are the principal contributors to various innovations. By documenting my real-life experience, I hope to provide helpful and interesting insight into performing conceptually complicated and indeterminate works. Additionally, by exhibiting my personal struggle, confusion, effort and passion, this paper is also an intimate story that invites other people to resonate with it. The purpose of this paper is to interest and encourage more piano students to liberate themselves, experiment, and take risks, living and learning.
