Abstract
Objective: Functionality-focused body image programs, which combat self-objectification by teaching women to focus on their bodies’ capabilities rather than appearance, are promising methods of improving body image. These programs may be especially useful for Latine women who experience both racial and sexual objectification; however, little is known about how Latine women identify with functionality-focused body image. The current study aims to understand how Latine women attempt to feel positively about their bodies and relate to the concept of functionality-focused body image to inform future cultural adaptation efforts.Method: Latine women (n = 17, ages 18-24 years) participated in four focus groups and seven individual interviews using a semi-structured guide. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Participant responses revealed six themes reflecting methods Latine women used to increase positive body image: community support, filtering comments, flexibility with body image and food choices, taking care of their appearance, focusing on body functionality, and seeking out representation of their body type. Additional themes of cultural adaptation included: addressing mixed appearance standards, confronting emotions, relationship with food, community importance, emphasis on specific functions, and language.Discussion: Latine women’s ideas could inform adaptation and refinement of functionality-focused body image programs. Findings may also assist clinicians and researchers working with Latine women to better understand and integrate cultural aspects of positive body image into evidence-based practice.
