Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to examine how women’s masculinity beliefs and perceptions relate to their attitudes toward interracial dating and preferences for men of different ethnic backgrounds. Interracial dating is defined as dating a romantic partner from a different ethnic or racial group than one’s own. Masculinity beliefs are defined as what individuals learn and internalize is a belief system about male role norms and appropriate gender relations. The final sample of this study included 277 White/European American female participants. Limited samples of participant ethnicities other than White/European American (n=34, 11%) did not meet the requirements for statistical power to provide interpretable statistical analysis, therefore, were excluded from analysis. Using linear regressions, the predictor variables (masculinity beliefs and perceived masculinity/femininity) was used to examine the amount of variance predicted within the criterion variables (attitudes toward interracial dating and interracial dating preferences). Additionally, a MANOVA was used to examine between group differences of women’s ethnicities. The results indicated that women’s masculinity beliefs account for a significant amount of variance in attitudes toward interracial dating; that women’s perceptions of masculinity account for a significant amount of variance in women’s interracial dating preferences; and that women’s ethnicity significantly impacts interracial dating preferences. However, there was not a significant association between perceptions of femininity and interracial dating preferences and women’s ethnicity did not significantly predict differences in perceptions of masculinity or femininity across ethnicities.
