Abstract
This article discusses online patient education materials (PEMs) in the context of type 1 diabetes and the language used to describe the condition. The role of healthcare providers and health information professionals in the delivery of online PEMs is described. Relevant theories regarding the impact of language are discussed. A theoretical framework for understanding and assessing PEMs is presented, along with the introduction of in-progress research on the use of language in online PEMs for adults with type 1 diabetes.
