Abstract
The music of Kurt Weill has long been celebrated for its fusing of German classical styles with the form of the American Broadway musical. Weill is a unique example of a composer who seems to be at odds with our need to place music into clearly defined categories. Although he is mainly remembered in America as a contemporary of musical theater composers Richard Rodgers and Irving Berlin, Weill composed in a variety of vocal genres, both while still in Germany and after he had fled in 1933. Vocal music written by Weill includes operas, German Lieder, song cycles with English texts, cabaret songs in a variety of languages, oratorio, Singspiel, chansons, cantatas, songs for film, and, of course, the Broadway musical. The purpose of this paper is to follow Weill’s works and compositional styles through four distinct time periods in order to provide context for singers who choose to perform Weill’s music.
