Abstract
Under the umbrella title “un/reliable reflections,” the two parts address burnout by comparing expectations for the reliability of computing and of data librarians. The first part, “The Burden of Reliability,” invokes expectations for the reliability of enterprise computing. It draws on Fobazi Ettarh’s concept of vocational awe (http://www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org/2018/vocational-awe/) to discuss the perceived morality of reliability and to guide attendees in several reflective writing exercises. The second part, “The Refuge of Unreliability,” draws on expectations for the reliability of research computing to pose one way of working less in order to be more creative and flexible. Attendees partnered with each other to practice conversations that could lead to doing less.
