Abstract
Sightreading is the ability to play a piece of music fluently with limited advance preparation. It is common for pianists to learn pieces over a considerable length of time with extensive repetition; the objective of sightreading, instead, is to achieve maximum accuracy and expressiveness with a minimal amount of practice time. The goals of daily practice compared to those of sightreading are sometimes incongruent. Good sightreading skills speed up the learning process. Although a significant amount of research exists on the means and benefits of sightreading, the necessary training to build sightreading skills is often neglected. Fortunately, the value of systematic teaching of sightreading is beginning to get the attention it deserves. This paper will first provide an overview of existing research as well as publications that target students and teachers, and then the focus will be on exploring and demonstrating practical methodologies to develop the skill of sightreading.
