Abstract
The 1862 Homestead Act Legislative History Story Map--see http://arcg.is/WDz9z--serves a crucial pedagogical need: Students in EVRN 332, Environmental Law, a required course for the KU Program in Environmental Studies, are required to develop a multi-media final presentation on the environmental law upon which they have conducted research during the semester. This Story Map provides a prototype for these presentations, building upon students’ legislative history research. The Story Maps for EVRN 332 allow students to step back from the complex story of legislative wrangling that they mastered during the research process, and to simplify the culmination of their research in crafting a five-minute visual presentation. I worked with the KU Libraries Research Sprint team to create the 1862 Homestead Act Story Map as a jumping-off point for developing an even more effective model for student presentations.
Description
Associate Professor of History Sara Gregg, who is writing a book called Little Piece of Earth about the history of the several Homestead Acts. The work for this presentation drew upon the legislative research of Graduate Engagement Librarian Carmen Orth-Alfie, the data management skills of Research and Data Analyst Greta Valentine and KU grad Kaitlyn Foster (CLAS 2019), the mapping expertise of GIS and Data Specialist Rhonda Houser, and the historical research of Content Development Librarian Sara Morris, as well as the invaluable advisory work of other KU Libraries staffers.
This Open Educational Resource (OER) is the product of a KU Libraries Research Sprint.
